Date Clan Mausleum: Prettiest When Dead

Date Masamune, founder of Sendai and general Samurai badass, was laid to rest along eventually with his family here in what was to become a massive mausoleum complex featuring really beautiful architecture and some truly stunning scenic moments, but only at times of low traffic. When it's busy, one has a tendency to feel like a herded cow and the natural beauty of the surroundings can be lost in the hustle and bustle. While this location is approachable by the Loople Bus (Sendai's sightseeing bus), the path from the bus stop to the entrance of the mausoleum is a steep climb so those with mobility issues would do better to avoid it or take it easy. While you can take a taxi up most of the hill, there is still a bit of stair climbing throughout the mausoleum complex. The historical buildings are gorgeous, and on this most recent trip in April of 2018, I got a chance to really see them and enjoy them. Many of the elements have special placards and most of those come with English translation, at least outside of the museum. Entrance to the museum is free but the English inside is limited and photography is prohibited. Entrance to the mausoleum is 550 yen for adults though showing your loople bus pass will get you a 100 yen discount. More information can be found on their website: http://www.zuihoden.com/en/
