    Charming and history-laden castle

Uwajima Castle, though tiny, is one of the twelve celebrated extant castles of Japan. The castle overlooks Uwajima City, a charming old castle town wedged between the Uwa Sea, part of the Seto Inland Sea, and the mountains to the east. The tiny castle is worth a visit for its historical value and also because it catches the sea breezes and affords an excellent view of the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can see clear across the sea towards Kyushu. In spring, the scent of mikan orange orchards wafts up to the castle. At various times of the year, visitors can witness sumo on the grounds of the castle. Although the interior of the castle is mostly empty, it's the castle site itself that is the most intruiging. Don't miss it if you're on the Shikoku pilgramage or simply touring in Ehime Prefecture.
