A charming area with a bounty of great stores

If you visit Okuni Shrine in Mori, Shizuoka, be sure to stop by the Kotomachi Yumei Komachi precinct while you're there. This area is packed full of charm, and there are a whole host of amazing small retailers, from stores selling loose tea by the bag, through to traditional sweets, chopsticks and chopstick rests, and more.

Alley of quaint shops and kiosks offering traditional Japanese sweets and Green Tea

There are a great selection of eateries at the little alleyway at the entrance to Okuni Shrine. The area incorporating the shrine is sometimes referred to as the "Little Kyoto" of Enshu. You can sample many different types of Japanese sweets and green tea too. The dango comes highly recommended and you can try many different flavours of the popular sweet made from mochi. Most of the shops in the area offer green tea flavoured goods, such as (afore-mentioned) dango, ice-cream, sembei and even pasta, to name but a few. We tried the Warabimochi, a type of jelly like confection. It is usually dipped in kinako, but in keeping with the green tea theme, ours was dipped in macha powder. I am not a fan of kinako so I don't often eat Warabimochi, but I discovered I can eat endless amounts when it is dipped in macha. Absolutely delicious! The alley is right by the parking lot for Okuni shrine which is free to use. Enden station Morimachi Byoin Mae and Totomi-Ichinomiya Stations are all about 8 minutes away by car. Each of them are on the Tenryu Hamanako Tetsudo Line. There is a seating area with beautiful red parasols which are common in Morimachi.
