Okazaki shrine - the rabbit shrine
The city of Kyoto has many popular shrines and temple, which are often very crowd with tourits. Between the famous silver pavilion (Ginkakuji) and the Heian shrine is a very special small shrine. The Okazaki shrine was originally protecting the emperor, his court and its citizenry. Nowadays the shrine got very popular because of the many rabbit statues and signs you can find everywhere around the shrine. A rumor says that all the rabbits are the messenger for the deities. Another theory is that long time ago many wild rabbits lived in that area, which was an outskirt of Kyoto. Many rabbit lover are visiting the shrine nowadays and praying for their own pets. You can also buy the typical shrine souvenirs like the ema plate or a talisman in the design of rabbits. You can reach the shrine by the local bus nr. 32, 93, 203 or 204. The bus stop name is Okazaki jinja mae.
