Therapy Cats

Hello! I heard it was hard to find apartments that accept pets in Japan. I have a therapy cat who will absolutely have to come with me on my journey. Does anyone know if Japan apartments recognize therapy cats or how hard would it be to get my baby accepted? Thank you for the help!

Hi There! My family has a dog, and we did find it a little more difficult to find a house that allowed pets. We were able to find a place, but just didn't have the same number of places available to choose from. On the positive side, I do think that overall that acceptability is growing for pets in rental properties here - I read a while back that Japan actually has more pets than children now, if that's any indication! In saying that I don't think there's the same understanding here about assigned therapy/emotional support animals as there is back in the States, for instance. You shouldn't have any great issue in actually securing a place to live, but just bear in mind that it may be a smaller pool to pick from.

Japan recognizes guide dogs, hearing dogs, and mobility dogs. However, from what I read, a dog trained abroad is not recognized by law in Japan. https://www.jsdrc.jp/for_users/for_int_users/ Japan doesn’t recognize therapy animals. Your cat would be identified as a pet. There are real estate companies that have listings for pet friendly buildings. Often landlords will require higher fees for pet owners. My previous house was like this - if we brought a dog onto the property, we would have to pay an extra one-time deposit and slightly higher rent.

When you are speaking to the agent, mention "pet allowed" and they will focus only on those ones. In big cities, maybe it is a bit harder or more expensive, but rural places tend to be more lenient.

How to prepare gobo, burdock root

Hello City Cost Hive Mind, I've been gifted a whole, dirty gobo root. I know how to cook kinpira gobo, but I've only ever handled processed gobo root. How do I prepare this root vegetable? Do I simply wash and then slice it? Does it need blanched or something? Cheers!

What's on your Christmas list this year?

Curious to know what everyone's hoping for this Christmas! Is it a sign of my age now that I want a robot vacuum?! I can recall a time when getting a cleaning object may have been downright offensive, but not these days! I don't really have much else that I want or need. How about the rest of you?

UNIQLO trousers post-laundry

Anyone out there know how I can stop my Uniqlo trousers from coming out of the washing machine coated in bits of what I guess is material from other stuff that they get washed with? And why is it only the Uniqlo stuff that I have this problem with? A note on the washing machine - it's probably about 20 years old. Changing the washing machine is something I'm hoping to postpone for some time yet. And on the occasion of the image in this question a white imabari towel was also in the laundry load which I assume to have exacerbated the situation this time around. I'm using liquid soaps and softeners.

Winter illumination recommendations in Japan

I'm quite a fan of Japan's winter illuminations and have been to plenty of spots in Tokyo -- Marunouchi, Shinjuku, Solamachi, Odaiba, Shiodome, Tokyo Midtown, Omotesando, Yebisu Garden Place. Anything I'm missing? Or any winter illuminations further afield that might warrant a trip out of town? Particularly interested in illuminations that are romantic and moody rather than, say, those with loads of crazy colors and designs.
